What do you need if you want to start oil painting and how much does it cost?

you don't need lots of things to start oils painting. just your various size paint brushes and canvas. oils can get expensive over time but they last quite a long time (depends on what you paint). i found a website for you on tips with oil painting. Have fun!

One way to cut down on expenses is to buy only about 10 colors that can be mixed to make any color you want. Those would be:

a big tube of white

Cadmium red med.

Cadmium yellow med.

Lemon yellow

Cerulean blue

Cobalt Blue

Burnt Sienna

Yellow Ochre

Permanent Rose

Burnt Umber

You can really paint with just ochre, cobalt and sienna and white, and by mixing cobalt and sienna you get a nice rich black.

It's good practice, and with a limited palette, you get unlimited experience!

Regular size tubes of paint average $5/a tube. You can get by on three filberts (because they can do everything a flat or round can do) with synthetic fibers, they're about $10 a brush, you need a palette pad, and canvas board is inexpensive, especially if they are small. Use turpentine and linseed oil, the turpentine to clean your brushes and to mix with the linseed oil to make a medium, a roll of shop towels for $2 and something to prop up your canvas while you paint on it, and you're good to go.

Maybe in the neighborhood of $100 or less if you limit the colors you buy. What do you need if you want to start oil painting and how much does it cost?
You need oil paints, some kind of palette, a medium to mix your paint, turpentine or turpenoid, a canvas, a palette knife. You could buy student grade paints and a student grade pre-primed canvass. To begin you will probably need about 7 or 8 tubes of paint. You will also need some brushes. Buy synthetic brushes of varying sizes. I would recommend fillet shaped brushes. You can begin with 3 or 4 of them. You will also need rags. I guess you could begin with about $75 to $100 for those materials and another $85 to $100 for an inexpensive easil. A small tube of paint will cost about $3 for student grade and an 11';X14'; or 16'; student grade pre-primed canvas should cost around $15. The best thing for you to do is to go to an art supply store and talk with them. See what they have available where you live and price everything there. You can also paint on wood panel or something called gesso board. If you use a wood panel, then you'll have to gesso it. I recommend that you take a class in oil painting. Your instructor will advise you about where you can get the best deals and what colors he thinks you should work with in the beginning.
