How to clean an oil painting?

Hi

I have an oil painting that I didnt frame... lots of dust has gathered on it. I've been trying to wipe it lightly with a damp tissue, but it still looks dusty (not at all like its bright, new colors like when it first came).

Is there a special way to clean oil paintings???How to clean an oil painting?
You can clean it with turpentine (sold in hardware stores) - just wiping it gently. But perhaps, it's already clean after you wipes it with damp cloth. Oil painting can look somewhat faded (colors not being as bright), if it wasn't varnished initially by the artist. You might put a layer or two of a special varnish (better to buy at an art supplies store) - doing so would restore the brightness of the painting.

Of course it's safer for a painting when such job is done by a professional.
