Do not use water with oil paints, unless they are labeled water miscible oil paints (e.g., Artisan brand).

Refined walnut oil can be purchased from health food stores and can be used as an oil painting medium to dilute concentrated tube oil paints. It can be used to wash paint off brushes. It is safer than odorless mineral spirits (OMS) (e.g., Turpenoid, Gamsol).

I agree with other postings, take an oil painting class. You will learn so much, so fast that you will be excited to create a new image every time you pick up a brush.

Go to your local library, I bet you will find ten books that will answer your questions.

I would advise you to find a teacher of Decorative Art who teaches in your area that uses oils. Our can maybe find one through the Society of Decorative Painters organization.

.

You will probably find you need more than just two brushes. And remember that brushes are your main tool. Buy the best that you can afford. Use Turpenoid to clean your brushes. When painting you can wipe the brushes out on an old rag or very soft paper toweling between colors..
The main thing is to just start painting. Learn to use what you have and how to lay down the paint on your canvas. Experiment with different ways to mix the colors you have and learn about the color wheel. Or you can follow along and paint with an artist at http://www.artloversart.com/. The lessons are always free.
Im an oil painter, but it would take forever to tell you everything. Go to a bookstore and buy a how to oil paint book.
To know everything about oil paint you really need to get a book because there is so much to know and no way you can memorize it. I am an oil painter, but I paint on wood. Get a paint thinner, this makes it so it does not go on too heavily and it makes it so you don't use too much of your paint because you just need a little dot then x amount of paint thinner to get the correct consistency. I only use to around 2-4 paint brushes on a painting anyways. Get a paint brush cleaner which is a metal cup with another type of cup inside, this makes cleaning easy. Use mineral spirits to clean the brushes, also really easy to clean with. You can do a lot of fun things with oil paints and personally my favorite to work with. I hope you have fun with your new paints. I suggest you take a look at Audrey Kawasaki's work. It is with oil paints also, the same type of work I do. If you have any questions, feel free to ask: pencil.art24@yahoo.com
Please do not do this yourself from online research. If you have a local Community College or Park District that offers a short course start there. They may even start you on Acrylic to give you an idea of how it all works, which is a very good idea. You need the benefit of a teacher's presence to guide you along.

If you have dirty brushes, you need to clean them. If they're cheapos you can use liquid hand soap. If they are expensive good brushes, go to your local art store and ask for a reasonably priced oil paint brush soap.

Good luck, I love it and am getting an MFA in it. :)

PS - It's cute how you said water won't mix it. Think -- oil and water... do they mix? ;)
