There is couple of things you can use and they have different qualities and uses. Linseed oil makes it more fatter. Use cold-pressed it is the best. Stand oil is thicker linseed oil, great for retaining brushstrokes and textures. Safflower and Poppyseed oil are good substitutes they don't yellow with age and don't smell as bad. Poppyseed oil gives the paint a beautiful buttery quality. it is the best. Liquin will also thicken up the paint and will let it dry faster, it is great for glazing. Add linseed oil. I usually keep small pots of oil and turpentine on my palette to use to thin the paint. Oil for a glossy thicker paint and turpentine for a flat thinner paint.
Agreed, linseed oil is best.
