I'd like the paint to flow more easily off the brush onto the canvas,be more 'slippery'. Should I be mixing the paint from the tube with something? Thanks.How can I get the oil paint to leave the brush easier? The Paint wants to stick to the brush ,not flow.?
Liquin has the slippery, flowing element you're looking for. I use walnut oil with a drop of cobalt dryer, sometimes add a drop of turpentine, usually, but when I want a truly juicy brush full of paint I use the Liquin.How can I get the oil paint to leave the brush easier? The traditional liquids are Turpentine and Linseed Oil.
Turps wets,or thins the paint and is a drying agent. It is used in the early stages of under-painting. Subsequent coats,washes,or glazes are achieved by adding a few drops of Linseed, which gives a more slippery and glossy finish, with a slower drying time.
Do not exceed 50% Linseed to Turps.This causes excessive Yellowing with age.
When Linseed is added it is refered to as '; Fat'; ,turps on it's own,'; Thin'; Do not paint thin over fat as the quicker drying time causes cracking.
You definitely need to use a medium for oils. I use a less toxic citrus thinner and use mixing recipes for various mediums to get different effects and drying times. Oils take longer to dry while thinners will have a shorter drying time. Also different brush shapes and types yield a different flow.Try getting a good basic book on oil painting materials and techniques and color mixing. You might try the Artist's Manual by Chronicle Books.
You can use some medium to get the paint to flow more easily. Such as;
Turpenoid, Linseed oil, etc.

Not just to buy but go through the list and read what each medium does.
I like to use mostly Turpenoid to thin and
I also like '; liquin';. It gives you a shorter drying time as well. It can also be used for glazing.
A lot of people like LInseed oil but I don't really care for it. It depends on what you like.
Hope this helps.

you NEED to use turpentine or another medium to paint with oil paint. it doesn't really work without it and it's a pain to clean the brushes
Sounds like you need to get new paint brushes, what you described there depends on the brush. :)
