Any pointers on how to paint with oils?

just got some tiny oil packet paints for Christmas. i'm excited because i know they take a long time to dry. i also know it smells like really badly and need to paint by an open window or something. anyway, im just not sure what to do with so little paint or any of the real rules on how to use oils

Oil paints are probably the most versatile paints that artists use. You can paint pictures from small detailed canvases to huge canvases that you can see in churches and museums. You can buy mediums that will speed up the drying time like liquin and will make your paint shiny or dull. You can add turpenoid to dilute the paint or linseed oil to make them thicker. There are many techniques and ways to use oil paint. Oils have nicer more natural colors than acrylics and don't darken when they dry, but they do smell and the fumes can make you sick. Use them in a well ventilated area and let them dry for couple weeks in a place outside your living space. I have a separate studio that is not attached to my house because I would get a runny nose and itchy eyes like I would have allergies when I was painting in my house and let the paintings sit there.


Diluted paint will dry faster than thicker paint. Diluted paint will take about a day to dry to touch thick impasto may take months. Always build up the paint from thin to thick. Don't skimp on paint. Use enough paint to get the effect you want. Having little paint does not mean you can not paint a beautiful picture, it just might mean you can't paint a big picture just smaller. Also you don't have to paint from background to foreground, and don't make the mistake to do so. Look at paintings by Van Gogh like Starry Night you will find that this doesn't apply. I always start with the part of the painting that interest me most and go from there adjusting parts of it as I go along. Layer layer layer. Background to foreground always. Also, oils work best with polygonal-like, simple shapes. The way to make it look more realistic is with color, lots of vibrant color in different shades and tones. I suggest studying, or google up ROMANTICISM, the best era in art to teach you about using color in this way, it'll help alot with your oil painting. If you want to make a more detailed picture I suggest switching to acrylic or even watercolor. Obviously clean your brushes spotless with oil after every period of working on it, and you are able to ';water down'; the colors by mixing oil into the paint. Have fun! :D

i first got mine last christmas and now they are basically all i use XD the colours are so rich!





Ok, use linseed oil when painting, it thins out the oils and makes it easier to apply/stroke :) and it also means you use less paint = lasts longer haha


and to remove the paint from brushes, soak them in turps/turpentine/metholated spirits (spelling?) lol cause water wont rid it. and defiantly dont inhale too much of these spirits cause i got so dizzy haha so do it outside.

-make sure you have A LOT of turpentine to clean your brushes because water and soap wont work.


-keep you painting in a dry area when it is drying or else the paint will get a film over it.


-have plenty of brush sizes.


-paint on a surface that can get sloppy


-dont wear your favorite clothing (oil based paint will NEVER wash out)


my favorite type of art with oil paint is abstract. it allows you to do what ever you want.

well I would suggest waiting for the primer to dry then using the acrylic over top of it.

There is a technich called Glazing. You can use some Umber color with lots of oil, in a way that you just put a very thin and glassy layer on the painting.

i dont recommend websites because they just teach you what you need to know





go to an art class, thats what I did and i learned some pretty interesting stuff that some website wouldnt have

Use linseed oil or liquid thinner ,artists quality, to thin your paints. Go to your thrift store/charity shop and get a few books on oil painting for beginners. How to add text to oil painting?

I am trying to make a logo type painting. I started with a canvas and added an oil paint background. I thought it would be ';easy'; to apply another layer of paint with the logo/design and font. But, I have tested white oil paint over dark oil paint background, and it looks okay, but it is so difficult to get a very straight edge for the lettering (tried freehand %26amp; using painters tape. The oil paint has dried for approximately 6 months, while I have tried to think of a way to do this. Now, I'm stuck. I want to paint or airbrush or tape/fix/glue fabric or paper or figure some way to add wording on top of my oil paint background. Does anyone have suggestions or ideas for how or what to use to add or paint crisp-edged letters on top of a oil paint background? I have read about oil painting and needing to layer ';fat over lean'; - so I know I should use a heavier oil paint or pastel if I use paint (and NOT acrylic). I also read that one should not glue paper over oil.How to add text to oil painting?
There are oil painting pens you can buy that will work very much like a marker though your paint must be dry.


Also a pallet knife will give you a straight edge. If the paint is dry you can also use a flexible drafting tape for the curves. (Be sure to burnish the edges with a flat knife to prevent leakage)


Basically you have the wrong medium for what you are trying to do. Your other alternative is to cut out a stencil from air brush stencil material with an xato knife and spray it.


You could start over with another canvass and get what you need to do in a few minutes. I know you said you did not want to use acrylic paint but you could have the entire painting done in a few hours. And remember a lot of artists use acrylic as an under painting so you could add some oil paint on top of the acrylic. Your tape will work better also.How to add text to oil painting?

Thank you very much for adding this! I think I will try to get some oil based markers to give it a try with the oil paint background. I will probably give it a go with the acrylics too, .... and see which one comes out better. Thanks very much for the help!

you can try silk screen, not sure what paint to use but suspect that its easy to find out if it will stick to oil. Silk screen is pretty easy, and you can find books on how to or ask a friend. there are many ways to get very sharp edges on text and even photo realistic images using photo light emulsions. Its is a simple process and everyone can do it.
