I taught myself to paint with oils and chose portrait painting to start out with because i felt it would eccelerate the learning process. Not knowing what i needed to get started i went to my local library and checked out as many books as i could get on oil painting and portrait painting. I'll have to be honest and say it wasn't easy but i'm glad i stuck it out and kept trying. They say it takes about two years to get really good and i say that's about right. It's been about six years now and have since been hired to do several works. I don't consider myself a portrait artist but that seems to be what i'm asked to do the most. I now have my own library of art books and magazines that i go to and read up on a new oil painting technique to try on a project. If it's something you really want to learn to do, give it your best, do your homework, and most importantly...have fun. My work can be checked out at hellosanantonio.com under artist name GUERRO1.How do i learn to oil paint?
Many are self taught painters, however it is no easy task. You first have to learn what ground you will use, canvas, board etc. Then what paint, and what colors. What medium, which brushes. How to start your painting, end your painting and all that goes on inbetween. There is texture, complementary colors, shadows, intensity of color, backgrounds, subject matter and so much more. You need a book to aid you in the above, and hope that the book is precise and factual.
