The acrylics are drying too fast and I can't blend them. How can you get acrylic to be more like oil paint?
fast dry medium under many brands- liquitex being a very reliable one. if you want the thinkness of oils, you can buy think acrylics which i believe take more time to dry. lukas cryl pasto is one, sold at artsupplieswarehouse.com. liquitex stuff is sold at michaels or hobbly lobby if you have one near you. you can also order online and its very cheap online but you have to pay shipping for $6 or so which is only worth it if you save enough money to pay for shipping. How can you get acrylic to be more like oil paint?
You can also try water based oil colors. They are really cool as you treat them just like acrylics but have the same properties of oils.
That's the way acrylics are .I hate the way acrylics are marketed as the do anything paint .It's not true, you have to treat acrylics as it's own kind of paint and accept them for what they are .They are not oil paint nor transparent watercolor even though they share common characteristics. Now there is open acrylics by golden and some retarder mediums you can add but they're still not oils. I wouldn't try to work them dry on canvas as oils.Remember they are water based paints.
Well to increase the drying time, you should purchase a slow drying medium made by liquitex. Its called Acrylic latex polymer, comes in bottles of varying sizes
Another medium to buy to make the paint be thicker and glossier like oil paint is by liqutex: heavy or super heavy gloss gel, which makes the paint glossier and thicker, but doesnt affect drying time.
Add structure gel to your paint. It prevents the paint from drying fast--the opposite affect that liquin has on oil paint. Galeria has a good version. Try going to your local art store and ask for it.
