How to tell if it is oil based paint?

I moved to my new home and want to paint the interior walls. I don't know what kind of paint is on there now. How can I tell if it's oil based paint?-I need to know if I should prime the walls first. How to tell if it is oil based paint?
If you take a small amount of denatured alcohol on a cloth and wipe your wall and paint comes off on to the cloth it is latex, if not it is oil.Yes,you should always sand and prime to get the best finish. How to tell if it is oil based paint?
Old based paints are normally more glossy than water based emulsion paint. When painted on wall surfaces, its sheen is more reflective on direct light shining on it. Anyway,it is not important to ascertain the old painted surface is oil based paintwork or not if you remember to prime the whole base with an undercoat primer. Ask the paint supplier or shop to recommend one as the base. Your final or finishing coat of paint is the main concern, Choose a light color primer or binding color with your final wall color for easy covering purposes. Choose white priming base if the choice is limited.
It doesn't matter if the existing paint is oil or latex. Use a good primer. I like Benjamin Moore Fresh Start acrylic. Then apply two coats of latex paint. A matte or eggshell finish is best for walls because it can be washed but doesn't have enough gloss to appear shiny.
i doubt very much if it is oil based. nobody uses oil based paints on interior walls. what you probably have is viynal silk, this has a shine that can be mistaken for oil based paint. just use emulsion and it will be fine. remember to sand the walls first.

if it is an old home it will definitely be oil based. I would go to a paint store and ask for their advice they will help more because you can describe the walls to them.
I doubt if anyone used oil-based paint on the interior......maybe enamel on the trim. Go ahead and paint away!
If the walls are already painted they do not need priming in any way no matter what sort of paint you use
